Katkaland is the creative playground of Katka Hubacek. As a little girl she loved drawing princesses, creating her own coloring book and spending hours dressing her doll Blanka whose wardrobe was handmade by her Czech grandmother. Katka and her sister spent summer days making mud patties and feeding imaginary animals.
Learning to knit, crochet, embroider, screen print, silversmith, sew, and make patterns, Katka has always had a hunger for learning and perfecting her skills. After graduating from the Scenography program at the National Theatre School of Canada and the Costume Studies program from Dalhousie University in Halifax, she worked on numerous plays, films and commercials as a costume designer and art director.
As an adult and professional theater designer, Katka’s favorite creative work involved making sets and costumes for fantasy worlds like with the musical ‘Into the Woods’. The movies she loves most are all magic realism or straight up fantasies.
Crafts and art have been in Katka’s life as long as she can remember. Everyone needs a place to express themselves and capitalize on their skills. Katkaland was an inevitable next step: a world created from all those ideas doodled in notebooks and on scraps of paper.
Thank you for visiting Katkaland, a land where the creatures, beings and inhabitants are all born of the land of Katka’s imagination, and where recycling is elegant and everything is unique. Enjoy your stay.
